The Devonshire Road restaurant has retained its title of best pizzeria in Europe, outside Italy

The 50 Top Pizza guide announced this year’s winners in an award ceremony in Madrid, where chef Michele Pascarella once again claimed the top spot. He has been winning awards in the contest for the past four years.

In 2021 Michele’s restaurant on Devonshire Road in Chiswick won 15th place. Then it went up to 8th place two years later, when Michele won Pizza Maker of the Year.

Reacting to the win, Michele said:

“The emotions are too strong right now to fully put our thoughts into words, but what we can say is ‘thank you’.

“I’m so proud of my team, of this journey, and of the fact that London is now at the top of the pizza world.”

Michele opened Napoli on the Road in Chiswick in September 2019, after selling pizza out of a three-wheeled Piaggo truck at markets. He now has a second branch in Richmond.

“This city welcomed me years ago and gave me the chance to grow, create and dream”, he said.

“Thank you to everyone who believed in me. This is just the beginning.”

Pizza of the Year

Another win for Michele was the Pizza of the Year award, where his Ricordi d’Infanzia (Childhood Memories) pizza claimed the top spot.

It is a Neopolitan style pizza with slow-cooked beef ragu, Parmigiano fondue and fresh basil. The pizza is an ode to his mother’s Sunday ragu, the dish of his childhood.

“I remember my mother waking up at 4am to start cooking it, letting it simmer slowly for eight or even ten hours”, Michele told the Independent.

“It’s not just flavour, it’s a feeling. It’s a tribute to those memories that made me fall in love with food, even before I realised it”.

Michele said that he is still recovering from the win, but he is now back in his favourite place in the world, by the oven.
