Network Rail to carry out more refurbishment work on the footbridge at Chiswick Rail Station

Chiswick Rail Station footbridge

‘Final phase’ of work on the footbridge due to be carried out 14 – 25 September

Network Rail are about to start on another round of ‘refurbishment’ works on the footbridge over the railway at Chiswick Station.

This ‘final’ phase of work is to take place during midweek nights between 14 and 25 September, from 10.00 pm and 06.00 am, and is ‘focused on completing outstanding refurbishment activities that will help extend the lifespan of the footbridge and maintain a safe environment for passengers’.

The planned works include:

  • Completion of painting and mastic application to the underside of the footbridge stairs and trestles on both sides of the station.
  • Minor painting works to the platform-facing sections of the footbridge.
  • Painting works on the Station Approach side of the footbridge.
  • Installation of high-level cable containment on both platforms.
  • Installation of ducting within the containment system on the platform stairs.

Residents are warned the overnight work will be noisy

Network Rail warns:

‘Some activities, particularly the cutting and drilling required for the cable containment installation, may generate noise during the works. There may also be an increase in site lighting and some vibration while work is underway’.

Last summer local residents in Grove Park complained that construction work on the footbridge was so loud overnight it had been keeping them awake.

One resident who lives nearby wrote to The Chiswick Calendar to say:

“The noise was extremely bad. In my bedroom, the noise level was +90dB. The legal limit is 24dB. It was impossible to sleep”.

The footbridge was out of action for six months, from August until the end of February this year, while it was taken away to be repaired. It was reopened with a slightly ironic ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday 27 February.

This time the work is only expected to take a few days, and Network Rail say:

‘Our teams will make every effort to minimise disruption to local residents and station users’.

To facilitate the works, a section of the footpath on Station Approach Road, adjacent to the station, will be temporarily closed during the work periods, but access to Chiswick Station will be maintained throughout.

Network Rail say they have written to local residents about the work and wish to say:

‘Thank you again for your patience and understanding while these final works take place’.
