New Tricks

BBC detective series New Tricks was filmed all over London, a lot of it in west London, with many sequences shot in Chiswick and Hammersmith.

The long running series (2003 – 2015) created by Nigel McCrery and Roy Mitchell follows the activities of UCOS – the Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad – with three chippy retired male officers working to a woman boss.

Alun Armstrong plays Brian Lane, the eccentric, curmudgeonly, recovering alcoholic with a brilliant mind and mental health issues, nicknamed ‘Memory’ Lane; Dennis Waterman the Jack the Lad Cockney womaniser Gerry Standing, with a string of divorces behind him and a fondness for good food.

James Bolam is the thoughtful one, Jack Halford, an acerbic senior detective, still grieving the loss of his wife. Amanda Redman plays their boss Detective Superintendent Sandra Pullman, a feisty, no nonsense team leader willing to tolerate their unconventional, anarchic way of working, to get results.

New Tricks ran to 12 series, due to the chemistry between the team, the strong scripts and the performances of the leading actors, supported by a host of other famous faces in cameo roles. Sheila Hancock plays Sandra’s mother. Fay Ripley, Jennifer Agutter, Elizabeth Berrington, Ronald Pickup, Sharon Small, Bernard Cribbins and Phyllis Logan are among those who portray an assortment of villains and witnesses.

In the later series Denis Lawson replaced James Bolam (series nine), Nicholas Lyndhurst replaced Alun Armstrong (series 10), Tamzin Outhwaite replaced Amanda Redman (series 10) and finally Larry Lamb replaced Dennis Waterman (series 12).

Their local pub is the Blue Anchor in Hammersmith. One episode is filmed at Fuller’s Griffin brewery, with the story based on the murder of a man who drowns in a vat of beer. Another follows the story of an East German man separated from his daughter when she was a baby, looking for her in Shepherd’s Bush. A third episode unmasks a serial rapist and killer who jogs in Gunnersbury Park.

Sprinkled throughout the episodes are recognisable Chiswick locations – lunch at the Bell & Crown at Strand on the Green (series 2, episode 5) and sequences in Grove Park and Bedford Park.
