Burglars get away with ‘high value jewellery’

The Metropolitan Police are appealing for information after a jeweller’s shop was burgled in Shepherd’s Bush early this morning.

Police were called at 03.31 am (Thursday 29 January), to reports that several men were trying to gain access to Sultan jewellery at 182 Uxbridge Road, at the Shepherd’s Bush end of Uxbridge Road, using various tools, including a sledgehammer.

The Police say officers were on the scene in three minutes and detained one of the men as he tried to get away on a moped, and that they were threatened with a hammer by another suspect, but they were not injured.

‘A number of suspects made off from the scene on mopeds and remain outstanding. They are believed to have stolen high-value jewellery’, say the Met.

A 33-year-old man who was arrested at the scene on suspicion of aggravated burglary remains in police custody.

Detective Superintendent Alex Bingley, from the Met’s Central West command unit, said:

“Quick work by our officers meant we were on the scene within minutes and able to interrupt the thieves.

“I’d like to thank the response officers first on the scene, who were threatened with a weapon.

“We know that incidents like this cause significant concern for businesses and residents, but we would like to reassure the public that we are working at pace to identify all those involved in this burglary.

“We’d appeal to anyone with information about the burglary or who has CCTV or dash cam video to get in touch with the police.”

Police warned jewellers only yesterday that there had been a rise in burglaries in the Hounslow area in recent weeks, with criminals specifically targeting gold.

Gold prices are at a historically high level, attracting thieves, and they are asking all jewellers, pawnbrokers, and gold traders in the borough to remain alert to anyone asking them to value, buy, or smelt gold where the origin seems unclear or suspicious.
