This year’s food and music festival in the gardens of Chiswick House will open on Friday 28 June with a charity gala hosted by David and Georgia Tennant, to raise funds for former Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s charity to help homeless people, Multibank. The evening will include performances by De La Soul, Stereo MCs, and The Feeling, with Vernon Kay as DJ and host.

Special guests at the gala will include Arabella Weir, Claudia Winkleman, Alex Jones, Romesh Ranganathan, Lenny Henry, Stephen Mangan, Gaby Roslin, Simon Rimmer, Dr Ranj Singh, José Pizarro, Matt Tebbutt, Mark Wogan, Andrea McLean, and Kate Thornton. Multibank founder Gordon Brown will also make an appearance.

Featuring the “biggest and boldest” lineup yet

On the afternoon of 29 June, Chiswick House Gardens will host Scouting for Girls, Flawless, and Big Little Fish. The evening will see performances by Busted, Toploader, and Modern Love.

The more relaxed Sunday afternoon session on 30 June will feature Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, with special guests Damian Lewis, Beatles Dub Club, and Billington and Quinn.

“More a food festival with music than a music festival”

Director of Pub in the Park Festivals Chris Hughes says he sees Pub in the Park as “More a food festival with music than a music festival”. He developed a multi-million-pound industry out of organising big events and festivals, and dreamt up Pub in the Park with celebrity chef Tom Kerridge as they chatted in the pub where they both live in Marlow.

Tom will be among the celebrity chefs at this year’s festival in Chiswick, along with Simon Rimmer, Andi Oliver, Big Has, Gennaro Contaldo, Tom & Robert Aikens, Emily Scott, Sophie Wyburd, Jeremy Chan, Mursal Saiq & Josh Moroney, Atul Kochhar, Ben Tish, Becky Excell, Sam Evans & Shauna Guinn, Jack Blumenthal, DJ BBQ & Chris ‘Chops’ Taylor, Nisha Parmar, David Lagonell and Chris Bavin.

Tom has appeared on the Great British Menu, MasterChef, and Saturday Kitchen and presented How to Lose Weight For Good and Top of the Shop for the BBC. He has also presented Bake Off: Crème de la Crème (2016) and presents Food and Drink (2015–present) for BBC Two.

Tom’s pub, the Hand & Flowers, in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, was awarded a Michelin star within a year of opening in 2005, and became the first pub to win a second Michelin star, in 2012. He opened the Butcher’s Tap (butchers and pub under one roof) and opened his first London restaurant in 2018 at Corinthia Hotel London.

Simon Rimmer will be hosting a podcast at this year’s festival. ‘Pod in the Park’ will feature an interview with Richard Hammond recorded live in front of an audience at the festival.

Local talent Joy Phillips among the chefs demonstrating their skills

Chiswick nutritionist and chef Joy Phillips, who runs Kitchen Joy cookery school, will be among the chefs demonstrating their dishes. She will be at the Firepit making spicy carrot and black bean vegan burgers, demonstrating how to make them and talking about the nutritional benefits of the ingredients, at 6.45pm on Friday night (28 June).

Joy told The Chiswick Calendar she set up her cookery school because she saw a niche for a “medicinal type of school.”

She offers courses for people who are living with diabetes or cancer for example, and want to have the best diet for their condition. She puts together diets with delicious dishes for people who are gluten intolerant, and courses for vegans to make sure they are eating a sufficiently balanced diet.

Cauliflower buffalo wings, smoky harissa dip (butter beans, garlic and tahini) and Japanese miso-glazed salmon are all examples of her largely vegetable and fish based range.
