Banned from driving for six months

The musician Richard Ashcroft, frontman of The Verve before he went solo, has been banned from driving for six months and given a fine which, with a statutory surcharge and prosecution costs, came to nearly £3,000, after he was caught speeding on the elevated section of the M4 at Brentford.

The Evening Standard reported the speeding offence was dealt with by Lavender Hill Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (7 January).

Ashcroft was driving a green 2018 Mercedes-Benz G-Class when he was recorded exceeding a 40mph speed limit. He pleaded guilty to the offence and the court heard he had nine relevant points on his licence already due to three previous speeding offences between December 16 2022 and October 21 2024.

Ashcroft, who lives in Richmond, did not appear in court, but his solicitor passed on his apologies, saying he had ‘an existing commitment he was unable to break’.

District Judge Daniel Benjamin, sentencing, said it was clear he had was “without any intention of abiding by the speed limit” and put other road users at risk.

He is the second celebrity the court has dealt with recently for speeding on roads around Chiswick. Former West Ham footballer Angelo Ogbonna was banned from driving for six months the previous week, for failing to give details of who was driving his car when it was caught on camera on the A316 Great Chertsey Road.

Richard Ashcroft is touring this year with his latest album Lovin’ You this year, starting in Cardiff and Liverpool and coming to the O2 in London on Saturday 28 March.
