Volunteer Chiswick: Samaritans
The Samaritans are a group of volunteers who operate a helpline for depressed and suicidal people. They are open 24 hours a day to listen and to help people with any issue, without judgment. Calls are taken by volunteers in local call centres; the nearest to Chiswick is in Ealing and they are always looking for more staff to answer the phone to people in crisis.
The charity gives training to new volunteers and once trained, they are assigned a mentor and are given support with taking their first calls. People who have worked for the Samaritans described the experience as wonderful and fulfilling. Volunteering to be a caller may seem daunting to many, and so there are lots of other ways to volunteer for the Samaritans instead, such as campaigning and getting involved in all events and fundraising. Each Samaritans branch is different and is run by a team of volunteers specific to that area, and so to be able to help as many people as possible, they need as many volunteers as they can get.
The Samaritans also hold regular information events to give people a sense of what it’s like to be a Samaritans volunteer. By attending these events you are under no obligation to go take it further.
