Sara Ward on Living the Good Life March 2026

Growing the Good Life

Wow, the recent sunshine has summoned Spring to blow a kiss and beautiful buds blush open in response. Outside our front door we delight in crocuses, snowdrops and daffodils, then in the garden we are starting to see the stone fruits; peach, plum and almond unfurl their blossom on the trees. This season, as Lady Whistledown would say, is the debutant ball of the year!

Last weekend, I continued to develop a south facing area of the garden, painting the fence before planting an apricot tree next to the small plum. I plan to train each into fans as a fruitful backdrop to the large rhubarb bed.

Looking at our orchard trees, I’m quite confident that the apple and pear trees, all four of them, will burst into bloom for Easter.

I’ve got six propagators full of seedlings waiting to be taken out to the mini greenhouse, which also needs a quick paint of the wooden frame.

We’ve got peppers and aubergines, tomatoes and cucumbers plus all kinds of salad crops. I have particularly high hopes for melons this year – mmm, let’s see…

As the sun comes and goes, so do the honeybees, desperate for the fresh nectar and pollen that is yielded all around. The chickens are enjoying the longer days and are looking forward to meeting local families at The Spring Market at Syon Park Conservatory next weekend. We’ll be there on Saturday 7th March 12-3pm.

Easter is only just around the corner and that means hot cross buns galore!

Come and make your own, along with fresh lemon curd, spring butterfly cakes and our Great Taste award winning Easter Apricot Couronne at Introduction to Easter Baking on Tuesday 31 March.

Families can join us for crafts, egg hunts, chicken cuddles and hot cross bun making at our ever popular Easter at Hen Corner on Saturday 4 April.

Then it won’t be long until the asparagus starts peeping through – perfect with poached eggs!

We hope to see you soon,
