September 2021 books

What’s new and good to read this month? Annakarin Klerfalk has a look at what’s on offer and chooses Apples Never Fall, The Man Who Died Twice and Beautiful World, Where Are You – all published in September.

Apples Never Fall

Liane Moriarty is famous for her bestseller Nine Perfect Strangers and the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning series Big Little Lies.

In her latest book, Apples Never Fall, we meet the Delaney family, who seem to be happy and content. Joy and Stan are former tennis coaches and their four adult children are busy with their own lives- until Joy disappears.

The investigation begins with the young woman who was their house guest the previous year. Is she the reason or is there something darker hidden within the family relationships?

The Bookseller magazine reviewed it as “Another addictive take on the secrets, lies and passions that roll beneath the seemingly tranquil Australian suburbs.”

Michael Joseph will release this sinister thriller on 14 September.

The Man Who Died Twice

Richard Osman’s debut, The Thursday Murder Club, is now a record-breaking, million-copy bestseller and Osman himself won Author of the Year at the Nibbies.

Osman’s sequel, The Man Who Died Twice, is set the following Thursday, when an old colleague sends Elizabeth a letter. In it, he reveals that he has made a big mistake and needs her help.

Elizabeth discovers one murder after another and teams up with Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron to catch the killer. Can the Thursday Murder Club solve the case before the killer strikes again?

Penguin will publish this excellent page-turner on 16 September.

Beautiful World, Where Are You

Readers know Sally Rooney from her bestselling and prize-winning novel, Normal People. Her latest book, Beautiful World, Where Are You, tells the story of a friendship between two women in their late twenties.

Alice is a successful novelist, living on the west coast of Ireland and Eileen works at a literary magazine in Dublin. They keep in touch by writing long emails about politics, art, philosophy and of course, their love lives.

They still have their youth but life is catching up with them. Will they figure out how to live in this beautiful, messy world?

Waterstones said: “One of contemporary literature’s brightest talents follows up the former Waterstones Book of the Year Normal People with an incisive and affecting dissection of the lives and loves of a quartet of young friends in Dublin and the west of Ireland.”

Faber & Faber will publish Beautiful World, Where Are You on 7 September.
