Sir David Attenborough teaches Geography for BBC Bitesize

Sir David Attenborough turned 94 on 8 May. This lovely portrait by Anna Kunst was taken when he visited JMW Turner’s house in Twickenham earlier this year to open an exhibition of Turner’s oil paintings.

The indefatigable naturalist and broadcaster, who lives in Richmond, has recently added ‘Geography teacher’ to his CV. He has taken on  the role of teaching online Geography lessons for BBC Bitesize, for children being home-schooled during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Covering material from Attenborough’s Life on Earth and The Living Planet documentary series, the lessons will focus on the map of the world and looking closer at animal behaviour.

He is among a number of celebrities who have agreed to turn to teaching for the BBC. Footballer Sergio Aguero is giving lessons in Spanish and EastEnders actor Danny Dyer investigates the life of Henry VIII. Other contributors include former One Direction member, Liam Payne and Doctor Who actor Jodie Whittaker.

Director of BBC Childrens & Education Department, Alice Webb said:

“We’re proud that the BBC can bring together so many people to offer such a wide-ranging package of support to help children and parents right across the UK at such a challenging time.”
