Cars routinely exceed 20mph speed limit along Southfield Road

Southfield Road in Chiswick may soon see the introduction of measures to reduce speeding, following its inclusion in a list of potential projects for funding. Ealing Council has submitted a request to Transport for London (TfL) for transport-related schemes, with Southfield Road appearing for the first time.

Liberal Democrat councillors representing the Southfield ward have highlighted their role in advocating for the road’s inclusion, citing years of consistent lobbying on the issue.

Southfield Road, a key route between Acton and Chiswick, is subject to a 20mph speed limit. Despite this, community-led speed monitoring sessions over the past five years have revealed that both cars and buses frequently exceed this limit. The road is regularly used by pedestrians, including families visiting Southfield Recreation Ground and children attending nearby schools.

Proposals to enhance road safety have included the introduction of a pedestrian crossing and electronic speed displays to increase driver awareness. While these suggestions have not yet been implemented, the road’s appearance in the council’s funding submission for 2025/26 marks a potential step forward, though this inclusion does not guarantee that funding will be secured or allocated specifically to Southfield Road.

“For many years, Southfield Councillors have worked with the local community to monitor and address speeding issues on Southfield Road. It has taken over five years for Ealing Labour to take notice. We will continue to press for clarity on funding allocation and delivery for our local communities.”
