Strand Antiques shop on the market after loss of ‘beloved figurehead’

Strand Antiques shop on Devonshire Rd is closing after being in business for more than 40 years. Founder Ann Brown, who was there from its inception at the original Strand on the Green premises, died in May.

“We have lost our beloved figurehead” her partners wrote.

One partner left the business soon after and the remaining two, Helen Somerville and Vanessa Costello, have been selling off Ann’s stock. Ann owned the building and left it to her sons, who have now put it on the market with commercial agents MJ Finn.

Helen was planning to retire at the end of this year but Vanessa is looking for other premises in Chiswick to continue her antiques business.

“Ann’s sons have been very good about letting us have a bit of time to adjust and if we can find somewhere else we will” she told The Chiswick Calendar. “People are heartbroken coming into the shop. We’re doing great business. Most of our business is repeat business. They’re lovely people and they call in every week”.

Ann was a well known figure in Chiswick, having set up Strand Antiques at Strand on the Green in 1977 and moved to the current shop on Devonshire Rd in 1999. What was less known about her was that she also worked for the Security Services in a senior role.
