Strand on the Green Junior School has achieved ‘Strong Standard’ in its latest Ofsted inspection, their first under the new Ofsted Report Card System.

Ofsted changed its system of reporting after the stress of the ‘brutal’ one-word summaries were found to have been a contributing factor in the suicide of Reading primary school head teacher Ruth Perry.

Instead of one word summaries: Outstanding / Good / Requires Improvement / Inadequate, which describe the school as a whole, Ofsted inspectors now rate schools with grades for different areas: Attendance and behaviour, Personal development and wellbeing, Curriculum and teaching, Achievement, Inclusion and Leadership and governance.

Each area is graded as either ‘exceptional’, ‘strong standard’, ‘expected standard’, ‘needs attention’ or ‘urgent improvement’.

Strand on the Green Junior School has achieved ‘Strong Standard’ across the board.

The report recognised the school’s commitment to ‘consistent academic achievement, a broad curriculum and outstanding personal development’. The report also highlighted the school’s success in fostering ‘a happy, inclusive and stimulating learning environment’, where pupils are excited to learn and achieve their best.

Inspectors praised the school’s high expectations, strong teaching and rich curriculum, which extends beyond core subjects to include sport, music, art and personal growth opportunities.

Headteacher Ruth Woods said:

“Strand on the Green Juniors is a happy school full of brilliant children and staff who give their best every day, be it in sport, music, maths or English. I’m so pleased that the inspectors saw that and recognised our commitment to every child achieving their full potential, academically and personally. I’m so proud of every single one of them.”

One parent commented:

“My daughter is happy and enthusiastic about school, which reflects the nurturing environment the staff create. The teachers clearly care about each child’s wellbeing.”
