Strand on the Green students celebrate an outstanding year of sporting success

Winners of five Borough Championships

Strand on the Green Junior School is celebrating an extraordinarily successful year with a clutch of trophies on display at their end of year sports day.

Amongst the standout achievements, the strength of girls’ sport at Strand was evident by the winning performances of the Year 3 and Year 4 football team who, having won the Borough Championship, then represented Hounslow in the London Youth games.

The girls also shone in cricket, convincingly winning the Borough Championship with a squad who had been training all season.

In cross country it was the Year 5 and Year 6 mixed squad who were crowned Borough Champions, with a number of remarkable individual performances which resulted in two children running the London Mini Marathon.

The Year 3 and Year 4 boys football team, not to be outdone, also won the Borough Championships, as did the boys SEND team.

“A total of no less than five Borough Championships achieved in one year across multiple sports is an outstanding achievement which reflects the breadth of talent and the high-quality teaching that is just part of everyday life at Strand”, said the school’s head teacher Ruth Woods.

“Sometimes we need to stop, pause and appreciate the fantastic sporting culture our passionate and dedicated PE team and fantastic spirited children have created”.

PE lead teacher Andy Ingram commented:

“It’s an incredible achievement. What made it even better was that each winning team had completely different children. So no child played for the football team and the cricket. This really showed the depth of quality we have here”.

In addition to the Borough awards the Year 5/6 Boys Borough Football team were Borough runners up and represented Hounslow at West London Finals and Premier League Primary Stars @ Brentford FC Training Ground.

The Swan team were runners up at both the Primary Panathlon (Invited to West London Finals) and Seated Volleyball (Invited to London Youth Games) and the school’s mixed teams achieved third place at both Year 5/6 Hounslow Borough Hockey and third place at Year 5/6 Hounslow Borough Netball whilst 100% of children represented SOTG in the Mini Marathon.

‘We even had over 30 children turning out on a damp Sunday morning to do an Osterley ParkRun’.

Sports Day was the culmination of an amazing year of sport for the school.

World record attempt planned for September

Looking ahead to the new school term in September, the school plans to be hitting the ground running, quite literally, with a whole-school Junior ParkRun event.

Never ones to shy away from a challenge, they are aiming to break the current Guinness World Record for the largest number of runners from a single school taking part in a Junior ParkRun.

‘The event will bring together pupils, staff and families in a celebration of fitness, teamwork and community spirit, while shining a spotlight on the school’s commitment to encouraging healthy, active lifestyles.

‘We’re excited to take on this ambitious challenge and hope the wider Chiswick community will be cheering us on’.
