The Ealing Project announces it will close Sunday 1 June

Staff and customers “gutted”

The Ealing Project has announced ‘with a heavy heart’ that they are closing, ‘with a final day of screenings on June 1st 2025’.

The multi-functional community space on the ground floor of the Ealing Broadway centre features a three-screen cinema, a café, a bar, community room, a stage for live music performance and space to exhibit art by local artists.

When it launched, the organisers said:

‘Ealing is in dire need of a space that is genuinely creative and reflective of the people that live in Ealing

‘Ealing Project is the first cinema in Ealing in over 14 years, but we want to be much more than a cinema. Our aim is to be a place for the local community to be inspired by watching films, attending events and actively taking part to our cultural programme by bringing their own ideas and creativity to the table.’

They announced the closure in a social media post:

‘We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us over the years. The community that we have built is truly special and we can’t thank you all enough! It’s with a heavy heart that we are announcing our closure, with a final day of screenings on June 1st 2025.

‘All of us at the Ealing Project are gutted but we are determined to go out with a bang and welcome lots of you this May half term holiday where you can catch Lilo and Stitch, Mission Impossible and many more.

‘Ealing Project’s initial purpose was to re-introduce cinema to the area after a 15 year absence. By working with our incredible landlords British Land we were able to regenerate a notorious venue in Ealing Broadway and achieve this goal.

‘They have been an absolute joy to work with and together we have created a space that is way more than just a cinema.’

The Project has welcomed after school clubs, local food traders, art classes, workshops, comedy and poetry nights as well as the Mahaba Café, a social enterprise that helps unlock employment opportunities for people with learning disabilities.

Members will have the opportunity to claim a free five-month membership at Ealing Picturehouse, available between Monday 2 June and 31 July, and valid for 150 days from activation.

An artist posting as Letsdrawnow.ldn commented:

‘Thank you for giving us a place to call home—a warm campfire where artists gathered each Wednesday, shared stories, and honed their craft. You will be deeply missed.’

Another regular customer wrote:

‘This is so sad and upsetting to read you are the heart of the community.’

The closure has been on the cards since the Really Local Group, which owns The Ealing Project, announced a restructure in January. It said then:

“The decision to restructure follows a difficult period for the business, driven by global challenges that have affected the industry. Over the past five years, the group has navigated significant obstacles, including the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to prolonged closures and reduced capacities…

“The energy crisis, inflation, and economic uncertainty were compounded by industry-wide impacts on cinemas from the Hollywood writers’ strike. Despite these hurdles, the Really Local Group remains committed to its founding vision.’
