The same but different

The Old Pack Horse pub on Chiswick High Rd has reopened after being refurbished. Shut on Sunday 10 March, it reopened on Thursday 4 April with a fresh new look.

The 18th century pub has been owned by Fuller’s since 1849. Emma Carpenter, the designer brought in to spruce the place up, told The Chiswick Calendar it was important not to change the concept of the original designer Nowell Parr, the brewery’s designer in the late Victorian period.

“It’s different but still the same,” she told us. “I hope people will walk in and feel something has changed, but not quite be able to put their finger on what.”

A very good description, I would say. The Old Pack Horse is a listed building, so they have not knocked through any walls, but changed the fixtures and fittings, brought in new furniture and given it a lick of paint and new wallpaper, which makes it feel fresher, brighter and much more attractive, without, as she says, changing the character of the place.

General Manager Jeremy Freeman is very happy with it. He showed Chiswick’s MP Ruth Cadbury around and posed for photographs with her as she cut the ceremonial red ribbon.

The pub serves excellent Thai food by Thai kitchen at the Old Pack Horse and has a full schedule of entertainment – stand-up comedy on the  last Thursday of the month, a weekly quiz on Wednesdays and a Drag Bingo night run by two drag queens – Aiden Orange and Miss Joele – on the first Tuesday of the month.

On Friday nights they have a licence until 2am, and house DJ Steve plays a range of music. On Saturday nights they have live music, with different artists every week, usually acoustic. They will also be starting an Open Mic night on the second Thursday of the month, says Jeremy.

On the beer front, as well as Fuller’s beers they promote a range of Craft beers from small breweries, including six diff beers from Galway Brewery.

We are very pleased that the Old Packhorse is a member of The Chiswick Calendar Club Card scheme, offering our subscribers 10% off all food and drink.

On opening the pub, Ruth Cadbury MP said:

“I’m delighted to be here today to see the changes that have been made to an iconic Chiswick landmark. A great pub is the beating heart of its community and it’s clear that Jeremy and his team have put together a calendar of events that should appeal to all – whether you want a quiet pint and a Pad Thai or a lively Friday night boogie.

“I wish the team every success and I look forward to coming back for dinner soon.”

General Manager Jeremy Freeman said:

“I am so excited to be reopening The Old Pack Horse. It is a stunning pub … My team and I just can’t wait to welcome in the local community.”
