Three jailed for Richmond jewellery shop smash and grab robbery

Deniz Mehmet, Robert Clarke and Lee Ramsey sentenced at Kingston Crown Court over £225,000 jewellery raid

Three men have been jailed for a combined total of 15 years and six months for the smash and grab robbery at a Richmond jewellery shop, months after a video of the raid was widely shared online.

The men were sentenced on Thursday 30 July at Kingston Crown Court. Deniz Mehmet, 28, of Basildon, Essex, was jailed for five years. Robert Clarke, 50, of Rochford, Essex, and Lee Ramsey, 46, of Harlow, Essex, were each jailed for five years and three months. Clarke received a further 15 months for a separate offence.

All three had pleaded guilty to conspiracy to rob. Mehmet entered his plea at Kingston Crown Court on Friday 10 July. Clarke and Ramsey had pleaded guilty earlier, on Friday 22 May.

The robbery took place in Paved Court, Richmond, on Saturday 31 January. A video filmed by a woman in a cafe opposite the shop, and shared widely on social media, showed two men in black, wearing face coverings, smashing the window of Gregory & Co jewellers with a sledgehammer, then reaching through the gap to take jewellery worth £225,000 as shop staff tried to stop them. The men ran off along the alleyway.

Officers arrested two of the men in Essex on 31 March, with the third arrested at a separate Essex address on 8 April. Detectives pieced together CCTV footage and forensic evidence, and traced a vehicle connected to the robbery, in order to identify the three men.

Detective Superintendent Dan Mitchell, from the Met’s Flying Squad, said: ‘Robberies of this kind cause real concern for residents and businesses in the communities that are targeted. It’s they who feel the immediate impact.

‘These sentences mark a significant step in what has been a detailed and determined investigation. I hope they demonstrate our commitment to tackling smash-and-grab robberies in London by going after those involved, wherever they are.

‘The groups responsible should be under no illusion: we will pursue you relentlessly and hold you to account.’
