TimeGivers looking for volunteers to run school clubs in Chiswick

A west London charity is appealing for volunteers in Chiswick to help run school clubs that teach practical skills and encourage children to give back to their local community.

TimeGivers works with primary and secondary schools to create volunteering opportunities for children, with adult volunteers leading clubs during term time. Activities range from sewing and cooking to gardening and intergenerational projects, all shaped around local community needs.

No previous experience working with children is required. Volunteers simply need a skill they are happy to share and the ability to commit to regular sessions.

Sewing clubs with a local impact

Pupils at Cavendish Primary School recently took part in a Giving Back Sewing Club, run over five weeks by volunteers Hellen and Derna, who gave up two lunchtimes a week.

The children learned basic stitches and pattern design before making robust catnip toys for cats at the Mayhew animal shelter. A small group of pupils were able to visit the shelter in person to deliver the toys, helping them see first hand how their new skills could benefit others.

Similar sewing clubs at The Good Shepherd Primary School saw pupils create handmade decorations for a local community kitchen, turning a practical skill into something that could be shared with others.

TimeGivers describes this as a “double bounce” approach, where children learn a skill and then use it to support their wider community.

“It’s really teaching them, from a very early stage, the value of volunteering and that is a huge part of the development of the whole person,” said Imogen Lavelle, Head Teacher of The Good Shepherd Primary School, in the charity’s December update.

Working with Chiswick schools

TimeGivers has an established presence in Chiswick schools. Recent projects have included cooking clubs at Chiswick School, where students can choose to donate their food to local charities, and collaborative creative projects with Strand on the Green Junior School and Cavendish Primary.

The charity says clubs like these build confidence, nurture creativity and strengthen community awareness, at a time when many schools are no longer able to offer a wide range of extracurricular activities.
