David and Georgia Tennant host former Prime Minister Gordon Brown at Pub in the Park to raise money for charity

David and Georgia Tennant hosted former Prime Minister Gordon Brown at Pub in the Park at Chiswick House on Friday night (28 June).

The former Labour Leader was there to promote his charity Multibank, which helps families in greatest need by providing food, clothes, bedding, baby provisions and toiletries. The proceeds from the tickets to the gala event were donated to the charity.

Gordon Brown told festival goers he started the Multibank charity because he grew up in a mining and textiles town where there was a lot of poverty. He thought he would never see that level of poverty again, but now it was widespread in the UK.

He said people were humiliated because they did a week’s work and still could not support their families, and that Multibanks were making a huge difference to people’s lives.

“Tonight a million children in this country will sleep without a bed. We’ve got to do something about it. Britain is better than the kind of system we have right now.”

Speaking to The Chiswick Calendar, he thanked the audience who had bought tickets to Pub in the Park’s gala evening on Friday.

David Tennant praised the work of the charity, saying: “Multibank works environmentally, it works socioeconomically, it just works.”

Arabella Weir, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Nicky Chapman, Lenny Henry, Clare Balding and Alice Arnold were among the celebrities who joined David and Georgia Tennant to support the event.

“The vibe is just lovely”

TV presenter Clare Balding and her wife, former BBC Radio 4 continuity announcer Alice Arnold, told The Chiswick Calendar that Chiswick House Gardens held a special place in their hearts:

“This is where we got married, which was about 17 years ago now. We had our wedding party here, so we’ve been regulars at Chiswick House and grounds for all that time, and it’s great, the vibe is just lovely.”

Alice added: “It’s a beautiful venue, it’s a beautiful evening, everyone is having such a lovely relaxed time, I just can’t think of a better place to be than here tonight, it’s just lovely.”
