Turnham Green tube station to be considered for step free access

TfL confirms the next 12 Tube stations ‘to be prioritised’ for step-free access

Turnham Green is on a list of 12 Tube stations being considered for step-free access. Transport for London is gradually working its way round the Victorian system looking at the feasibility and cost of improving accessibility to Underground stations.

Work is due to start on Northolt station, on the Central Line, early next year. TfL announced on Monday (5 August) they are making a start on design work for Alperton, Arnos Grove and Eastcote, on the Piccadilly Line.

Earlier this year they announced they would start design work on North Acton (Central Line) and West Hampstead (Jubilee Line), which brings the number of Underground stations with funding in place for this phase to five.

Turnham Green is among an additional seven Tube stations will now be assessed for step-free access feasibility. The seven stations are Croxley (Metropolitan line), East Finchley (Northern line), Neasden (Jubilee line), Northwood (Metropolitan line) and Turnham Green (District / Piccadilly lines), as well as Colliers Wood and Tooting Broadway on the Northern line.

Cllr Jack Emsley, in whose ward Turnham Green tube station is, told The Chiswick Calendar:

“That’s great news. It’s about time. It feels like it’s been an age. It’s ridiculous that we still have stations that don’t have step-free acess.

“I hope they do find it’s feasible and that we have step-free access at Turnham Green tube station some time soon.”

Only about a third of Underground stations across the city provide step-free access, and the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has set a goal of making 50% Tube stations step-free by 2030.
