Portraits and landscapes

Ljubima Woods, who won the 2021 Bedford Park Festival photography competition with her picture of Kearsney Abbey Gardens in Kent, is showing an exhibition of her work at the Hogarth Health Club.

The exhibition features 20 framed prints on fine art paper showing a selection of her portraits and landscapes, some of which are of Chiswick. She is hoping to attract some commissions for portraits.

Her picture of some Red Devils bikers at a pub in Margate won the Portraits and People category in the Bedford Park Festival photography competition in 2022.

“I just noticed them across the road” she said.

‘A Year With My Camera’

Ljubima came to photography relatively late in life. Having spent 36 years working as a producer for BBC radio at the World Service and freelancing as a theatre critic, she took a photography course with Emma Davies in 2019.

‘A Year With My Camera’ is a free course Emma offers online which has some 10,000 people taking part from all over the world. She gives the participants a different task each week across a year – for example the task one week might be to take a wide aperture shot with shallow depth of field.

“I learnt so much from her – about aperture, focusing, shutter speed, depth of field – I learned terminology I wouldn’t have understood before” says Ljubima.

Ljubima set up her own Instagram account while she was on the course and now has two successful accounts – @ljubimawoods and @ljubimawoods4591. She took part in her first photography competition the same year, the International Gardening Photographer of the Year. Two of her photographs of Sissinghurst Castle and Gardens were Commended and Highly Commended.

“I find photography fascinating. It’s a great hobby to have as it gets you out and about and it involves my two favourite things, walking and travelling.”

Ljubima lives in Chiswick, Kent and Sarthe in France. Her photographs are also currently on show in the “Sarthe through the eyes of Instagrammers” exhibition on the railings of the Town Hall in Le Mans, Sarthe.

You can see her photographs at the Hogarth Club until Sunday 5 February. You do not have to be a member of the club to go in and have a drink and enjoy the art work in the cafe.
