See the work of dozens of local artists in Brentford over a weekend

Organisers of Brentford’s ‘Creative Mile’ are inviting local residents and visitors to explore the area’s vibrant arts scene over the weekend of Friday 30 August to Sunday 1 September.

Supported by Hounslow Council, the popular annual trail connects a variety of venues showcasing the work of painters, ceramicists, printmakers, jewellers, poets, musicians, and more.

Now in its fourth year, the Creative Mile is part of the Council’s Summer of Culture programme, which celebrates arts, culture, and community.

The trail features 24 stops along the trail and each stop will be host to one or more artists showcasing their works of art. The locations include some stunning yet familiar venues such as the Museum of Water and Steam, Watermans Park, and the artists community on Johnson’s Island. Attendees will have the chance to buy unique artworks directly from local creatives at each stop.

The event is free to attend, with no booking required.

Meet the artists and see their work up close

Some of the artists whose work will be on display are mixed media abstract fine artist Amelia Lucy Wood, who will be showing her work at Studio Flox; ceramic sculptor Claire Ireland, at the Museum of Water & Steam; and photographer Gozia Wosniak will be based at the Musical Museum.

Gozia, who has lived in Brentford for 17 years, said she enjoys the rich community and culture of the area and was “thrilled” to be taking part in the Creative Mile this year. She added:

“Photography is one of my great loves, allowing me to capture the world through my lens. I am deeply interested in gender bias and gender stereotypes, and I incorporate these themes into my work. My current project is a social experiment which I collaborated on with a renowned psychologist, Diana Nowek.

“Through this project, I aim to challenge and expand perceptions, making meaningful contributions to our society. To complete my project, I explored Artificial Intelligence which is a symbol of our times representing the pinnacle of technological advancement and its profound impact on various aspects of life.”

Multidisciplinary artist Matilda Wilkinson will be showing her work at Johnson’s Island. Chiswick abstract artist Martina Rohr will be at the Museum of Water & Steam. Acrylic, watercolour and oil painter Parul Bariyan will be at ANIMA | Elemental Expression.

“Art that keeps you excited”

Martina Rohr, who showcases her work in the annual Artists at Home event in Chiswick, said of her art:

“I wish to create beauty which engages and disturbs your senses, changing perspectives and moods, offering you different viewpoints. Art that keeps you excited, that you long to look at, just sit and stare, sense and experience, art that responds to your visual needs, your inner eye, your meaning, your message.”

Speaking about her creative process, Parul Bariyan said:

“Artistic expression defines my lifestyle. While I primarily employ acrylics, I often find myself drawn to oils and watercolors, depending on the subject. My focus revolves around capturing everyday scenes and people, particularly drawn to the vibrant colours.

“Lately, I’ve been enthralled by the idea of Saree Pop Art. There’s an indescribable joy in observing the graceful ladies draped in sarees, serving as inspiration for my creations.”
