Weekend roadworks on A40 Westway Friday 23 January until mid-April

Worn out structures supporting elevated section need replacing

There is a programme of planned roadworks on the A40 Westway starting on Friday 23 January which is expected to last until mid-April.

The A40 will be closed eastbound (towards central London) between the Westway roundabout at White City and Marylebone Flyover from 10.00pm on Fridays until 05.00am on Mondays.

‘The diversion route and local roads (especially Westbourne Bridge Road) will be extremely busy’ say Transport for London. ‘Peak hours (06:30-09:30 and 16:00-19:00) will be particularly busy.

‘Delays to your journey are likely. There will be delays to buses, especially those operating along the A40 and in roads around the flyover’.

These are the bus services that are likely to be delayed: 6, 13, 16, 18, 23, 27, 28, 31, 49, 52, 70, 72, 74, 94, 95, 98, 113, 139, 148, 189, 205, 207/N207, 220, 260, 272, 274, 283, 295, 316, 452, E3, C1, SL8.

The impact of the planned roadworks will be exacerbated by the restrictions around Holland Park Roundabout while Thames Water work on repairing the water main which burst on Wednesday 21 January.

The A40 is one of the busiest routes on the TfL’s road network, used by around 96,000 vehicles a day. Westway structures carry the elevated A40 from Wood Lane flyover to the west side of Marylebone flyover.

There are roughly 21 bridge structures which support the carriageway and slip roads along this section of the A40, which were built between 1969 and 1970 using reinforced concrete.

The work being carried out is essential safety work say TfL. The structures are being refurbished because ‘several components have reached the end of their service life’.

Various works will continue on the A40 until July 2026.
