An Evening with Michael White - next Tuesday
BBC journalist Julian Worricker interviews Michael White, formerly the Guardian's political editor, assistant editor, columnist and foreign correspondent, for The Chiswick Calendar's Media Club.
Michael wrote for the Guardian for almost 45 years and retired from the paper in October 2016. In nearly 50 years as a journalist he has done all kinds of writing but it was politics which fascinated him most.
He was the Guardian's Washington correspondent during the presidency of Ronald Reagan and the paper's political editor through the prime ministerships of John Major and Tony Blair.
What words of wisdom does he have to pass on, having had a front row seat at so many significant events? What were his greatest achievements and most embarrassing moments? What does he think of Boris Johnson and the current state of British politics? Or of the existential crisis facing the newspaper industry?
Come and find out and ask him a question or two of your own.
Date: Tuesday 10 March at 7.30pm
Venue: Boston Room at George IV
Tickets £10 / £8.00 students and Club Card holders

How to create a Flower Market
Talk about a steep learning curve. This is one you could ski off!
Having received enthusiastic support at our first public meeting and on social media for the idea of a flower market in Chiswick, the consortium of residents and businesses behind the idea, which includes The Chiswick Calendar, is pressing ahead with the next steps.
We've completed our business plan, which you can see on the Chiswick Flower Market website: www.chiswickflowermarket.com
We are in the process of setting up a Community Interest Company to run it and have started talking to traders about the practicalities.
We are meeting the senior officials from Hounslow Council who have been asked by council leader Steve Curran to set up a Flower Market project team, this week.
We'll be sending out a survey to canvass views more widely, and we'll be holding another public meeting to report back on progress on Tuesday 31 March at 7.30pm at George IV.
If you'd like to get regular updates by email about the Flower Market, you can sign up to the Flower market mailing list by dropping us a line at info@chiswickflowermarket.com.

Cautious welcome for Heathrow decision
There has been a cautious welcome in Chiswick for the Court of Appeal ruling that the proposed expansion of Heathrow is unlawful because it does not meet the Government's international commitments on Climate Change.
Heathrow has announced it will appeal to the Supreme Court and is ebulliently confident that it will ultimately succeed:
'The Court of Appeal dismissed all appeals against the government – including on “noise” and “air quality” – apart from one which is eminently fixable. We will appeal to the Supreme Court on this one issue and are confident that we will be successful'.
Read the reactions on The Chiswick Calendar website.

Cherrygate - the final chapter
After the kerfuffle over the planting of a few cherry trees on Turnham Green, the eventual outcome was that Hounslow Council paid for the trees. Ten went to Heston, where a grateful Friends group were delighted to have them. The remaining six trees were given to LB Ealing, to be planted opposite Turnham Green tube station.
What will happen to the Friends of Turnham Green now that chair Rebecca Frayn and planter in chief Karen Liebreich have resigned? To be decided, but there are no meetings scheduled at present.

Beethoven can't answer back
John Humphrys was in Chiswick talking to BBC journalist Julian Marshall last Thursday in front of a packed audience at St Michael & All Angels Church.
The former BBC Radio 4 Today presenter said he was enjoying life post BBC. He's now presenting for Classic FM. "Beethoven doesn't answer back" he said.
He spent more than 50 years working for the BBC, which is documented in his book A Day Like Today. Find out what he had to say about the biggest stories of his career, reporting on Aberfan and Watergate, what he thinks of BBC management, the nine prime ministers he's interviewed and what the Queen said to him during their private lunch, in my account of the evening on The Chiswick Calendar website.

Chiswick House Camellia show
The Camellia Show at Chiswick House opened at the weekend, earlier than initially advertised because the weather has been so mild.
This year the blooms are spectacular and more plentiful than I remember, which head gardener Geraldine King says is because the conditions have been perfect - wet and warm.

Captain Rawes returns to Chiswick House
Also new this year, a long dead sea captain has returned to Chiswick House. Captain Rawes was the first camellia reticulata to be introduced into Europe, named after Captain Richard Rawes of the East India Shipping Company, who brought the camellia back for his friend Thomas Carey Palmer of Bromley in 1820.
Chiswick House had one, but it died. Geraldine has been on a trip to Chatsworth House to get a replacement.
She's also been to China to visit the original habitat of many of the 32 heritage plants growing in Chiswick House conservatory. Read more about these rare and wonderful plants on The Chiswick Calendar website.

March Books
March is full of big publications by famous authors. The Mirror & the Light by Hilary Mantel is already being tipped for the Booker Prize, since it is the third in her trilogy, the first two of which (Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies) have already won Booker prizes.
Maggie O'Farrell also has a big book out this month - Hamnet - which tells the tale behind Shakespeare's play of the same name. It takes a certain confidence to tackle a subject like that.
As usual, Anna Klerfalk gives us variety in her recommendations. Her third book is Wayfinding: The Art and Science of How We Find and Lose Our Way by science journalist Michael Bond. He is also an award winning author.
Read more about this month's most interesting books on The Chiswick Calendar website.

Chiswick Auctions jewellery auction
Chiswick Auctions is holding a jewellery auction today (Tuesday 3 March from 11.00am), which will include pieces by Greek craftsman Ilias Lalaounis (1920-2013).
Lalaounis has come to represent "the epitome of Greek-style and craftsmanship" says Chiswick Auctions' Head of Jewellery Sarah Duncan.
His modern take on the craftsmanship of ancient Greece draws inspiration from archeological digs he took part in; "his creations fusing the best that Greece has to offer in both history, contemporary design and workmanship".
You can read Sarah's guest blog on what makes Lalaounis one of her favourite jewellers on The Chiswick Calendar website.
