Yoga for back care and joint health

Lots of people try yoga because they want to feel calmer, looser, a bit more balanced in their bodies. And then, somewhere around week three, they realise something awkward, not all yoga is automatically good for back

Sometimes the stretching and twisting that looks so wholesome on Instagram is exactly the thing that flares everything up.

That is basically why Chiswick resident Bene Spoelders became a yoga therapist.

She has been teaching back care yoga in Chiswick for over 14 years, and she trained in therapeutic work after learning first hand that standard classes can sometimes make back pain worse, especially when the underlying cause is not understood.

Most of the time, Bene works one to one, because back pain is rarely one size fits all. A herniated disc is a classic example. Certain poses can support recovery, while others can aggravate symptoms badly. The difference can be months of improvement, or years of frustration.

Her approach goes beyond the mat, too. Sessions tend to involve noticing posture and day to day movement habits, improving breathing patterns, and building in relaxation.

Bene also encourages people to practise at home between sessions, and she loves the long game of helping people stay mobile as they get older. She is especially proud of the clients in their eighties and nineties who still come regularly.

Alongside private sessions and existing group classes, Bene is now launching a new small group course at the end of February, taking place once a week for five weeks.

It’s for anyone interested in a whole person approach to back care and joint health. This is gentle, non competitive yoga that is not about chasing shapes or pushing into positions. It is about feeling better in your body, moving more freely, and leaving the room a little calmer than when you arrived.
