Organisers hope they are in with a chance of winning

Voting has opened for the Great British Market Awards 2023 and Chiswick Flower Market is making a bid to be crowned Britain’s Favourite Market.

Last year the flower market, which opened in 2020, was “Highly Commended” and the organisers hope this year they will be in with a chance of winning an award even though they will be competing with markets which have been running for decades.

The online public poll for the prestigious award opened at noon on Monday (7 November).

Chiswick Flower Market said they would be “delighted” if anyone would like to vote for them. Entries, which close on 13 December 2022, can be made through The National Association of British Markets’ website.

If you would like to register your vote, click on the link and once you select the option to vote, just scroll down the list to find Chiswick Flower Market. The awards will be presented at the NABMA  2023 conference in January.

The flower market takes place on the first Sunday of every month from 9.00am- 3.30pm, on Old Market Place, Chiswick High Road. It attracts visitors from across London, though most are local. There are around 30-40 stalls selling everything horticultural, from cut flowers, to house plants, bedding, pots, grow-your-own.

Winning would be “amazing recognition”, says Chiswick Flower Market director

When the flower market team heard about the awards last year and put in a submission, it was already too late to begin a campaign with the hopes of winning enough votes. Despite this, the judges decided to offer the Highly Commended certificate. This year is the first time organisers are asking supporters for votes and trying to spread the word.

Kathleen Mitra, one of the directors of the Chiswick Flower Market team, told The Chiswick Calendar:

“We would be delighted to be voted best market and it would be a great way to promote Chiswick and help our aim of benefitting the High Road.” Winning would be “amazing recognition” she said.

David Preston, CEO of The National Association of British Markets, said:

“We are thrilled to be launching the Great British Market Awards. The award for Britain’s Favourite Market always attracts thousands of votes, so it’s a great way to keep your customers talking about their favourite market.

“We look forward to a busy voting session over the coming weeks and to seeing all the entries for the Great British Market Award categories. I would like to wish every market ‘Good Luck’.”
